
Celebrating the Great Mother Ayizan

Today 𞤸𞤱𞤤𞤽𞤲 𞥒𞥕⹁ 𞥖𞥒𞥖𞥖 Hlwɛn 25, 6266 (June 11, 2025), on this 𞤧𞤵𞤲𞥂𞤫𞤳𞤢 𞤺𞤢𞥇𞤲𞤶𞤭𞥊𞥅 sunkpeka gãnjí (auspicious full moon), ushers in the official 𞤿𞤱𞤫𞤣𞥉𞤵𞤣𞥉𞤵 xweɖuɖu (annual celebration) of the Vodún deity 𞤢𞤴𞤭𞥊𞥁𞤢𞤲 Ayìzan. She is known as the protector of markets, public places, doors, entrances of various kinds, and barriers, and has a deep knowledge of the intricacies of the spirit world. She is intricately connected to the forest as well as commerce.
She selects and instructs certain novice 𞤸𞤵𞥊𞤲𞤽𞤲 hùnɔn (priest of the hùn - deity. Òrìṣà if it were Yorùbá). Her favorite tree is the palm tree. Ayìzan is symbolized by mounds of earth sprinkled with oil and surrounded by fringes of palm. She is one of the oldest hùn and is therefore entitled to first offerings at services. She is said to be the mother of the priesthood. Ayìzan protects against malevolent magic, and is the psychic security which is power and health. One major aspect of Nana Ayizan is that she governs 𞤧𞤢𞥈𞤤𞤢𞥉𞤱𞤢𞥉 sàláwá ("karma" in Ajã language). In truth, Mother Ayìzan governs cause and effect.
